”Lotus Sketch” Series
Artist: Chin Hung Lee
Chin Hung Lee masterfully blended Eastern ink painting, transparent watercolor, and calligraphic strokes to create lotus sketches even longer than Monet's "Reflections of Clouds on the Water-Lily Pond." Critics have hailed these works as "heroic tapestries," with Hong Kong art critic Li Hua-Chuan calling him a "painting wizard." Lee's lotus sketches are deemed worthy of display in the world's top art museums.
Using water scoops, mops, and brushes, Lee painted in the air, using nearly 5,000 sheets of Arches paper over ten months to depict the seasonal changes of lotus flowers. This series showcased his "explosive sketching" technique, jade-like colors, and the reserved white space characteristic of traditional Chinese painting.
In 2014, after a ten-year hiatus to care for his mother, Lee resumed his artistic journey. Each morning at five o'clock, he sketched at the lotus pond to capture its most beautiful moments. Before painting, he would meditate to quiet his mind, blending inner cultivation, cultural richness, poetic expression, and rhythmic brush strokes to create a series of exquisite lotus paintings, rich in Zen and the contemplative thoughts of a self-cultivation practitioner.
